Der Geburtstag des Prinzen fiel auf den Tag des heiligen Ludwig IX., König von Frankreich und Stammvater des Hauses Bourbon. Sein Großvater und Taufpate Ludwig I. von Bayern, am gleichen Tag geboren, hatte Ludwig XVI. von Frankreich zum Paten gehabt. Für das Selbstverständnis des Prinzen blieb diese Beziehung zum Königshaus der Bourbonen zeitlebens bedeutsam.
